Swim workouts by distance: 2,000 m to 6,000 m sets that make sense

A workout is not a distance, it is a shape: enough warm-up to swim well, one clear main set with one clear purpose, and a cool-down that lets you come back tomorrow. Here is what that shape looks like at each length.

The ratios that hold at every distance

Across the 152 coached sessions in the SwimSwimSwim library the split stays remarkably stable: roughly a quarter to a third of the session is warm-up and technique, half to two thirds is the main set, and the last 10 % is easy swimming. The shorter the session, the more the warm-up matters — a 2,000 m swim with a 300 m warm-up is a race, not a session.

One rule before the examples

A session has one focus. Endurance or sprint or technique or threshold — not all four because you happen to have 90 minutes. Mixing a hard threshold set into a sprint session ruins both: you are too tired to be fast and too fast to hold the pace. Pick one, do it properly, go home.

Making any of these fit your day

Every session in the library can be scaled to the distance you actually have time for — the generator keeps the structure and the focus and trims the repeats, in multiples of 25 m so the numbers still work in a real pool. Pick a focus, set your distance, and if you have saved your CSS your target time is printed on every rep.
